Note: At McGovern Hurley, we balance work-life integration with a commitment to excellence. We operate in a hybrid work environment requiring two in-office days per week at our North York office, with Thursdays designated as the Anchor Day for the Tax Advisory Group (TAG).
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of U.S. tax planning strategies, delivering high-quality tax solutions across complex cross-border matters.
- Oversee the preparation and review of complex U.S. federal and state tax returns, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance.
- Conduct technical research on U.S. cross-border tax issues, assessing implications and translating findings into clear, actionable insights.
- Analyze client financial and tax data to identify risks, discrepancies, and strategic planning opportunities.
- Collaborate closely with Tax Engagement Teams to plan timelines, risk assessments, and other key engagement documentation.
- Coordinate with the IRS and state authorities, managing elections, filings, and regulatory correspondence.
- Contribute to McGovern Hurley’s growth by building client relationships, identifying new business opportunities, and actively participating in business development initiatives.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and performance guidance to emerging tax professionals, promoting professional development and long-term career growth.
What You Bring
- 3-4 years of progressive U.S. tax experience in public accounting as a CPA (U.S.), CPA (Canada), or EA (Enrolled Agent).
- Hands-on experience with complex U.S. tax engagements and memorandums, including personal, trust, estate, and gift tax across real estate, mining, or professional services.
- Versed understanding of U.S. federal and state corporate income tax compliance with client-first, advisory mindset to understand business needs and deliver strategic tax insights.
- Strong organization and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with confidence.
- Driven, growth-oriented professional committed to continuous learning and professional development, with a proactive approach to ownership and impact.
- Strategic planner, analytical thinker and strong communicator who translates complex tax matters into clear, practical insights—both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated alignment with McGovern Hurley’s values of collaboration, respect, accountability, integrity, and quality.
- Availability to work onsite two days per week at McGovern Hurley’s North York office, with Thursday designated as the designated in-office Anchor Day for the tax practice.
- Fluency in additional languages and tax provisions is considered an asset – please let us know if you speak other languages.
